What retraction does
Section titled “What retraction does”Retraction pulls filament back before a travel move, relieving pressure in the nozzle so plastic doesn’t ooze out across the gap. It’s the primary fix for stringing.
It’s also the setting most often over-tuned. Excessive retraction causes worse problems than the stringing it solves.
Try this before touching retraction
Section titled “Try this before touching retraction”Most stringing is not a retraction problem:
- Dry the filament. Wet filament strings badly and no retraction setting fixes it. PETG, nylon, and TPU absorb moisture fast. If your spool has been open for weeks, this is your answer more often than not.
- Lower the temperature. Run a temperature tower. 10 °C can eliminate stringing entirely.
- Check travel speed. Faster travel gives ooze less time to form.
Work through those three before tuning retraction. Probably half of all “retraction problems” are one of them.
Starting values

Bowden needs far more because the tube compresses. If your direct-drive machine wants 5 mm, something else is wrong — usually moisture or temperature.
Running the test
Section titled “Running the test”- Enter your start distance, step, and band height into the calculator.
- It generates the layer-change G-code. In OrcaSlicer, this goes in the custom G-code block.
- Print a two-tower stringing test model — two thin spires with a gap, so every layer forces a travel move.
- Find the lowest distance with acceptable stringing. Lowest, not zero-stringing. More retraction than necessary causes real damage.
Tune distance first with speed fixed, then tune speed with distance fixed.
Why more isn’t better
Section titled “Why more isn’t better”Over-retraction causes:
- Clogs and heat creep — repeatedly pulling molten plastic up into the heatbreak, where it cools and jams. This is the big one on all-metal hotends.
- Gaps at the start of perimeters — pressure has to rebuild before extrusion resumes
- Filament grinding — the drive gear chews a flat spot, and now you have inconsistent extrusion everywhere
- Slower prints — every retraction and prime is time
A tiny amount of fine stringing that cleans off with a heat gun is a better outcome than a clog mid-print.
Related settings worth checking
Section titled “Related settings worth checking”- Z-hop — lifts the nozzle during travel. Helps with knocking over parts; adds little for stringing and costs time.
- Wipe on retract — often does more for stringing than extra retraction distance.
- Retract on layer change — usually leave enabled.
- Minimum travel distance for retraction — default around 1–2 mm. Lower means more retractions and more grinding risk.
Common mistakes
Section titled “Common mistakes”- Tuning retraction to fix wet filament. Dry it first. This is the single most common one.
- Chasing absolute zero stringing. Diminishing returns, real costs.
- Using bowden values on a direct drive machine. Copying settings from a forum post about a different printer is how people end up with 6 mm retraction on a direct drive and a heat-creep clog every third print.
- Tuning before temperature. Temperature affects stringing more than retraction does.
- Ignoring grinding. If you see filament dust in the extruder, back off distance and speed.

- Temperature
- Rotation distance
- Flow rate
- Pressure advance

Pressure advance genuinely reduces the retraction you need, so tune PA first and you may find the stringing is already gone.
